Beatriz Gómez Acuña is a professor of Spanish and chair of the world languages, literatures and cultures department at Elmhurst University. html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd" The Hispanic/Latino population in northeastern Illinois has been growing steadily in recent years and currently is approximately 26% of the population in Cook County, 24% in Lake County and 15% in DuPage, according to the 2020 U.S. Census. This demographic shift has had a direct impact on institutions of higher learning like Elmhurst University, where for the past several years more than one-quarter of our undergraduate student body has identified as Hispanic/Latino.
